Understanding Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity Symptoms in Autoimmune Disease

by Katrin Olavessen-Holt BA Psych, PharmD, CMTM, CPGx

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity symptoms can often go unnoticed, or misdiagnosed, especially among people living with autoimmune conditions. In today’s episode of The Wellness Pharmacist with Dr. Kat, I discuss how non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is different from celiac disease, how it shows up in your daily life, and what to do if you suspect gluten is impacting your health.

Although non-celiac gluten sensitivity symptoms vary, common ones include:

  • Bloating, cramping, and abdominal pain
  • Joint pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Skin issues such as rashes
  • Anemia

Unlike celiac disease, there’s no specific lab test for NCGS. That’s why it’s often overlooked. For many, symptoms persist until they remove gluten and begin to feel relief within days to weeks. However, it’s important not to self-diagnose. Working with a healthcare provider is critical, especially if you already have an autoimmune condition like lupus or Hashimoto’s.

In this episode, I break down:

  • The difference between NCGS and celiac disease
  • How gluten might be impacting your immune system
  • The role of elimination diets

Remember, non-celiac gluten sensitivity symptoms are real and manageable with the right guidance and support.
