The Gut-Immune Connection in Autoimmune Disease

by Katrin Olavessen-Holt BA Psych, PharmD, CPGx, CMTM

The gut-immune connection in autoimmune disease is gaining increasing attention from both researchers and patients. In fact, up to 80% of our immune cells reside in the gut, making this relationship especially important for those managing chronic illness.

What is the gut microbiome?

Your gut microbiome, composed of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, does much more than help you digest food. It also plays a critical role in training the immune system. When the balance of these microbes is disrupted (a condition known as dysbiosis), it can lead to chronic inflammation and increase the risk or severity of autoimmune disease and other illnesses.

Emerging research reveals clear links between gut health and conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. For instance, studies show that patients with lupus have reduced gut microbial diversity and more inflammatory bacteria. Similarly, multiple sclerosis patients often show changes in gut flora that trigger immune overactivity. This gut-immune connection in autoimmune disease is now seen as a key target for supportive care.

Evidence-Based Steps for Gut Support

Fortunately, there are evidence-based steps you can take to support your gut. These include increasing fiber-rich foods, incorporating fermented items like yogurt and kimchi, reducing unnecessary antibiotics, and managing stress. Some people may also benefit from targeted probiotics, although this should always be discussed with a healthcare provider, especially if you are immunocompromised.

By caring for your gut, you’re not just improving digestion, you’re actively supporting your immune system. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or years into your autoimmune journey, understanding the gut-immune connection in autoimmune disease offers a powerful tool for healing.
